Gold plated jewellery is made of both real gold twinned with a different base metal. Whilst these pieces are not solid gold, the plating itself consists of real gold. However, for a piece to be labelled ‘gold plated’ the layer of gold must be equal to or greater than 0.5 micron.

Gold plated jewelry is not really made of gold, the base metal in that situation is usually a copper or silver. These are much more affordable than gold alloys. Gold plated jewelry is made by using electricity or chemicals that deposits a very thin layer of gold over that other base metal. A gold plated piece of jewelry is a piece of metal jewelry with a layer of another metal on top, in this case, liquid gold. Because the layer of gold plating is very thin, gold plated jewelry is much more affordable.
